BREATHING SPACE
by
Bisgaard / Rathschau / Lisboa (丹麦/葡萄牙)

Signe Bisgaard, Laura RathschauRuben Lisboa

Signe Bisgaard

Geir Lysne.

Interactive art and music installation
by Bisgaard / Rathschau / Lisboa (DK / P)

Bisgaard/Rathschau/Lisboa is a Danish/Portuguese trio combining modern art, music and digital     design. Their works have been shortlisted at Danish Design Awards 2017, nominated as Most Innovative History-presentation and was chosen as opening act at Danish Music Awards Jazz  November 2016.

In this fifth work from the trio, arbitrary movements are the starting point. In a multi-genre installation, Bisgaard/Rathschau/Lisboa offers the audience control of their work in a responsive room with multiple projections and sounds. The work is defined from the cyclic dialogue between the materials and the people present, and triggered by sensors in the room. Its expression is ever-changing and every breath is unique in the instant depiction of the space.

The installation explores new perspectives on real time composition in an united output of visual and auditive art. It unfolds with music, videos and moving images in a distinct experience for eyes and ears. As in a holistic spaceship, everything is connected. From small movements in space everything is given life – and the audience is invited to compose and join the meditative journey on board.

Installation at gallery RØM 2017

The previous works from the trio are all connected to the Breathing Space-universe. All of their works are part of the same cluster, and they have a strong background-connection, even though each work is at the same time an independent stand-alone piece of art.

Their first production Never Ending Shanghai is a time-travel connecting Shanghai in the 1920’s with our time. With innovative music and spectacular digital scenography, the audience was sent back and forth in time, in an overwhelming performance with 23 musicians live on stage and multiple projections on sculptural surfaces. The work was based on a fictitious story in a factual setting, researched by historians from the University of Aarhus, Denmark. The story was originally released as an interactive digital comic, and the visual artwork in Never Ending Shanghai is a mix of original source-photos from that period, modern animated movies from the comics and analogue pictures and moving images. Designer and visual artist Laura Rathschau processed the diverse visual inputs, and created a new expression, using her personal strong aesthetics mixing analogue and digitally programmed visuals.

Breathing Space originates from Never Ending Shanghai, and it is a new abstract work based on emotional interpretations of the former stage performance. As all works from Bisgaard/Rathschau/Lisboa, the different universes are connected but at the same time independent.

The next ambitious work from the trio is a pocket work, derived from the installation Breathing Space. It is an interactive app for smartphone, in which you wander the old streets of Shanghai. The app combines music and visual art, and it comes with a DIY-projector. It offers a brand new, physical piece of art for everybody to enjoy at home. The first test version is out now.

Signe Bisgaard, Laura Rathschau and Ruben Lisboa have been working together for the last 2 years. An exploration of the connection between eye, ear and mind drive the collaboration where art meets jazz meets interactivity. The three artists are all born in 1981.

Music is written by Signe Bisgaard, who brings her background in contemporary jazz with live-played acoustic instruments into a digital universe of synthesizers, lasers and glitch-effects. Her critically acclaimed works have been played on Danish radio and television, and as a bandleader she has performed in a.o. Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Ukraine and the Czech Republique. She’s working in the field between classical music and jazz, and when she was a younger jazzpiano-student at the music conservatory, her music was always different from the others’. She worked in the borderland of jazz, sometimes doing film-music, sometimes with string-quartets and sometimes with avantgarde freejazz. In her longing for coherence, she moved to Germany for a year, and after a few years back in Denmark finishing her master-degree, she was selected for the advanced postgraduate-programme as a composer. In this context she moved to Norway to study classical composition and take lessons with the current leader of the NDR Bigband, Geir Lysne.

These formative years with travelling and a deep exploratory desire to find coherence and acceptance of her own musical expression, brought together an open-minded and curious composer, always seeking new ways. Her last album was chosen to be amongst the 10 best jazz albums of the year, gave her the nomination as jazz composer of the year at the Danish Music Awards Jazz, and Danish daily broadsheet Politiken gave her top-character saying “In a quiet manner, Signe Bisgaard breaks the borders of what’s possible in music for large ensemble.”

“The coherent experience of storytelling, music and images is a unique experience “
(Danish review of Bisgaard/Rathshau/Lisboa at Aarhus Jazzfestival, July 2017)

Laura Rathschau is a multidisciplinary conceptual designer based in Copenhagen. She started her career being a musician, mostly as a live bass player touring in Japan, Brazil, UK, France, Germany, Norway and several times in the U.S. In 2004 she was accepted at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine arts and Design, and here she studied for 5 years exploring her passion for textile design mixed with sound and installation-art. In that period she both worked with artists in Buenos Aires and studied film- and photo techniques at Ontario Academy of Art in Toronto, and refined her artistic expression with exhibitions, performances etc.

The aesthetic focal point of Laura Rathschau’s work is the dialogue between the analogue and the digitally programmed work. She is passionate about opposites and combines textures, movements, space, tactility and electronics in an ongoing investigation of reactions to relations. Her ideas and visions occur in both physical and digital spaces.

Laura Rathschau has made visuals for Sonár Cph, audiovisual art installations for Roskilde Festival, The Danish Concert Hall and the art space RØM, she also did stage design, music artwork + music videos for various Danish artists.

Her career as a bass-player actually led to the cooperation with Signe Bisgaard. Together they were the female backing-band for a famous Danish actress, and when the band ended, they had a strong common understanding of one another. Their mutual understanding of music and art, and the infinite number of ideas that kept coming in an endless brainstorm, led to many late nights of talking. The favorite topic was the understanding of the connection between music and images, and the numerous ideas that they wanted to try out. After working as a duo for a short while, Ruben Lisboa became an indispensable part of their partnership.

Ruben Lisboa is from a family of photographers. Both his grandparents, father and brother are photographers, and he grew up in Portugal with photo studios and photo equipment around him. At a young age he started working as a photographer himself, but after he moved to Copenhagen in 2006 his love of technology led him to work with software development too.

As an artist Ruben Lisboa is combining the old, analogue handcraft as a photographer with digital art and technology. Most of his works are audiovisual, often reflecting eternal transformations and mental illusions. Another recurring theme in Ruben Lisboa’s work is the interplay of interactivity and sound. With sound machines, live “sound- plants” and new innovative instruments his inventions explore the many possibilities in multimedia art.

Ruben Lisboa has collaborated with Sonár Cph, Roskilde Festival, galleries and many other artists and institutions. He’s been part of the research group at Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design CIID – and among other things he has done a workshop at Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria.

Ruben Lisboa is involved with the international MAKER movement, sharing the interest in building, inventing and sharing knowledge throughout many different disciplines. He  recently won a prize at Philadelphia University in the United States, for his collaboration in an innovation challenge mentored by Johnson & Johnson. He’s also a software developer at the international company Deltek.
